Some of the fun things we've done the last month of the summer: copper mine with cousins; hosting a July 24th block party; a trip to Boondocks; backyard smores, movie, and campout; huge stake service carnival/celebration; and a visit from my parents which included 1) a trip on the train downtown to the planetarium, Imax movie, Discovery Gateway museum, and dinner, 2) going to the movies to see Kung Fu Panda 2 and 17 miracles, 3) recording part of my parents life history. The kids were not so thrilled about starting school. They lovingly named the first day of school "death day". Jeffrey even wore all black. I hope once they get back into the routine, they'll feel differently about it. Last week Derek informed me that his dear parents have agreed to watch the children while we travel to China again next month courtesy of the same hospital that hosted us last time. This time we'll only go for a few days and may get to tour Beijing a bit. Very exciting!!
Derek
1. Had a string of bad luck: animals dying, grants denied, lost funding, grant accidentally not turned in on time
2. Accompanied the boys to scout camp for the week near Grand Teton.
3. Took the girls to a Mormon Tabernacle Choir concert & dinner with their uncle and cousins
4. Started the daunting task of fixing up the deck. It needs some beams replaced and a new paint job.
5. His car died and most likely will either need a new engine or will need to be replaced.
Aly
1. Took Faith and the boys to a parade and dinner while Derek took the girls out.
2. Repainted and decorated the basement bathroom.
3. Got to visit with two of my college roommates and their families.
4. Got another calling: primary pianist every other week. I stink and really need to practice!
5. Launched her first class at Big Picture Classes, and is working on another one.
James
1. The carnivorous plant he ordered arrived dead so he got his money back and put it toward a corn snake that he and Jeffrey share.
2. Barely survived scout camp and almost didn't finish the hike to Table Rock.
3. Is very sad school started yesterday. His 8th grade classes are Advanced Band, PE, Health, Honors English, Honors Science, History, and Geometry.
4. Loves to play badminton with the older kids in the backyard, and he and Jeffrey both invented some pretty complicated and cool battle board games.
Jeffrey
1. Earned extra money (along with james) to buy a corn snake since we already had the tank, etc leftover from Fluffy. They named him King George Pahoran Dosdall the 32nd.
2. Helped motivate James to finish the difficult hike at scout camp by telling him he'd never let him live it down. He liked roasting marshmallows at camp.
3. Has been more patient and getting along better with Lexie.
4. Started 8th grade yesterday. Has Advanced Band, Honors English, and Honors Science with James. Also French 2, Geometry, History, and Health.
Ashley
1. Lost two teeth and got braces on her top teeth. Next month she'll get them on the bottom. She looks so much older!
2. Ashely turned 11 and celebrated with a trip to Boondocks (fun center with lazer tag, mini golf, go-carts, etc). Derek took Ashley, her best friend, Paige, and the older kids. They came home for dinner, cake, and presents. She got some new roller blades, a cute purse filled with goodies, the Rio DVD, and some new jammies.
3. Her orthodontist rented out two sneak preview theaters for his patients to see Harry Potter 7: 2 free of charge. I took Ashley, and we had a great time.
4. Started 6th grade yesterday. She has two teachers who are sisters and split their job: Mrs. Birth and Mrs. Wakely. One of her best friends, Paige, is in her class but her other best friend, Hannah isn't. Oh well.
Lexie
1. Enjoyed a tour of welfare square with the activity days girls in our ward.
2. Had a blast on a two night sleepover with her cousins in Spanish Fork (and Ashley). Grandpa was so sweet to provide more than 2 hours of transportation to make it happen. Thank you!
3. We are tapering off her therapy appointments and she is generally doing better with her depression and anxiety. Her therapist is awesome, and she's going to miss him.
4. Started 4th grade yesterday. Her teacher is Mr. Butler, the ukelele man. Some of her friends from last year are in her class--she's very excited!
Faith
1. Loves to color...on everything. Paper, walls, her legs, whatever!
2. Knows all the letters of the alphabet and is learning some numbers and shapes too. I made some flashcards for her to look at in church. They keep her busy, but then she shouts out the name of the picture on the card. Hmmm. Maybe not such a good thing for church?
3. I think her favorite phrase right now is "mommy carry". We're trying to teach her to say "please" and "thank you", but she'll only do it sometimes.
4. Is obsessed with the loose skin on peoples' elbows. It's like her security blanket when she gets tired. She'll even ask for it, "eh-bow? eh-bow?"
