Derek and I started alternating taking the kids on parent-child dates, which we all really love. We also took a family trip to an aquarium in Sandy. We were pleasantly surprised by how much we all enjoyed that. We are making our summer plans, which include scout camp, girls camp, fun educational camps for the younger girls, and the three older kids getting jobs harvesting crops on a local farm about 15 hours a week.
Derek:
1. Is presenting a poster at a conference in Denver this week.
2. Sadly there have been some layoffs at work and he's had to let go of some vet techs, post docs, and researchers in his lab. =(
3. On a happier note he got a small grant from the University of Utah that will pay for a much needed cardiac mapping system.
4. Has gone on several camping trips with the scouts from church that have mostly included bad weather.
Aly:
1. Has taught and/or is working on three new online scrapbooking classes at Big Picture Classes. This has been a great opportunity to earn some much needed extra money for savings. =)
2. Unfortunately one of the companies she works for, Creative Memories, filed for chapter 11 last week, so she won't be working for them anymore. =(
3. Started running more regularly again with the nice weather
4. Is spending less time in lengthy RS meetings, which makes life a little less stressful
James:
1. Won the school ensemble festival for his french horn duet with his friend Sam, and they represented the school in the district festival
2. Was called to serve as the teacher's quorum president, and has done a great job
3. Got his driver's permit after finishing his Duty to God for Teachers, and getting his grades to all A's or A-'s
4. Took the AP environmental science test and felt pretty good about it--he got the highest score in his class on the practice test
5. He and Jeffrey registered for high school--yikes!
Jeffrey:
1. Took the state math test again, and got the highest score at his school...again. He definitely didn't get that from me!
2. James asked him to serve as his 2nd counselor in the teacher's quorum
3. He had to miss 2 consecutive school days for band performances and festivals (he wasn't too sad)
4. Is taking the AP human geography test on May 18th
5. Also got his driver's permit after meeting the same goals as James
Ashley:
1. Had fun participating in Centerville Junior High Idol competition
2. Did well in her drama club performance/dinner
3. Loved the date she went on with mom to see the opera, The Magic Flute
4. Was awesome in her role as The Bard in her Sword in the Stone performances
5. Passed her musical theater audition for school next year--she's so excited
Lexie:
1. Has had some fun research projects at school: Utah high school graduation rates, her pioneer ancestors, Juab County Utah, food web mobile for brine shrimp
2. Spent a fun afternoon swimming and going out to dinner at a fancy hotel downtown with her best friend, Sophia, and her parents
3. Is taking a beginning diving class at the local rec center with Sophia
4. Can't wait for the 4th grade music and dance program, and the Spectrum musical review program
5. Will attend a kids science camp at the University of Utah on scholarship this summer
Faith:
1. Her best friend, Logan, moved to Washington state
2. She got her first haircut losing 6 inches of her long locks. She looks so much older now!
3. Derek put up an art display board for the girls' artwork, and Faith filled it up with watercolor paintings in about 5 minutes
4. Her latest favorite PBS Kids show is Wild Kratts. Now she spouts off all kinds of animal facts we never knew.
5. She's a rock star. If you don't believe it, just watch this:
