october 2011

October was a fun month filled with gorgeous fall weather and fun activities.  We took a drive up the canyon to see the changing leaves, visited a corn maze/farm/pumpkin patch, attended some community Halloween events, went trick or treating, and ate too many yummy treats.

Derek:

1. Has had some very frustrating set backs at work.  Several animals have died unexpectedly which has led to some problems with the center on campus that is supposed to facility animal research, but instead has been acting as a "watch dog" and reporting his lab and impeding their work.  It appears they have ulterior motives and want Derek to hire their vets and vet techs to do his experiments so they can make more money, instead of him using the people he has hired in his lab.  So their plan is to make his job impossible to do.  Gotta love campus politics. =)  Hopefully they can resolve this soon.
2. Finally finished repairing and refinishing the deck out back.  We decided instead of painting it the red that it was, that we would paint it a nice russet brown to match the house better.  It looks awesome, and he did a great job sticking it out.  Hopefully we won't have to mess with it again for four or five years.
3. Ditched work one afternoon to accompany us and some of his family to a local corn maze.  We were so happy he could come with us!

Aly:

1. Had another random tachycardia episode, though we did notice two things in common with the first one--taking Sudafed and bending over to pick something up.  I think we'll be seeing a cardiologist this time to check things out more thoroughly.
2. Still enjoys playing volleyball with our ward team.  We've won several games recently and are looking forward to possibly playing in the regional tournament.
3. Trades babysitting with a neighbor now.  Faith loves to play with Cooper and did great her first time over at his house while I got my hair done.
4. Made a layout and some cards for print ads for a manufacturer I work for that is based in Salt Lake.  I've had many projects published in print articles, but this is my first ad and I'm kind of excited!

James:

1. He and Jeffrey have been doing a great job of taking care of their snake, George, with no reminders. They take turns doing extra jobs to earn the money for his food too.
2. He and Jeffrey both played very well at their first band concert together in the Symphonic (or advanced) band. They played some tough music (including Carmina Burana) and did well.
2. Really enjoyed the scout camp out to Crystal Hot Springs (as did Jeffrey). I think this is the first one they've actually looked forward to in months.
3. Dressed up as a millionaire for Halloween. He wore slacks, a white shirt, a sport coat, a yacht club cap, and had fake money spilling out of his pockets. He also carried a wealthy man's walking stick/cane thing-y a la Mr. Howell from Gilligan's Island.

Jeffrey:

1. Cleaned out and re-organized his room without me asking one afternoon. He threw away a whole big trash bag full of stuff. Go Jeffrey!
2. Made it into the Davis District Honor Band, which is a few select students from each jr high and high school in the district who get together for a few rehearsals and then perform a concert for parents and friends. It's quite an honor, especially at his age.
3. Dressed as a spider for Halloween with a black sweatshirt and sweat pants, giant black pipe cleaners, and a black snow cap with giant googly eyes hot glued to it.

Ashley:

1. Really enjoys her ballet classes each week. They've started learning their choreography for the full ballet production the studio will be doing of Cinderella. Ashley can't wait for that.
2. Has gotten into a good practice routine each week with her violin. She enjoys learning that and is progressing well.
3. Is very responsible about keeping up with her busy schedule and getting herself up in the mornings, even when she has early orchestra rehearsals before school. I never have to remind her about what she's got going on each day.
4. Dressed up as a vampire for Halloween. I bought her the dress part of her costume, but she did extra jobs and earned enough to buy herself a cool cape to go with it.

Lexie:

1. Enjoyed having a few neighborhood friends over (as did Ashley) for a little Halloween girl party while the boys were at their camp out. They played Night at the Museum, made some spider treats, and watched Monster House while munching popcorn.
2. Learned her first song on the ukelele in her school music class--Achy, Breaky Heart.  Yeah, baby!
3. Enjoyed the Halloween party for her musical class.  They played some fun games, did the Monster Mash, and got a big treat bag to take home.
4. Dressed up as a hobo for Halloween, complete with a handkerchief tied on the end of a stick.

Faith:

1. Started potty training. We bought her a little pink potty and some Dora undies. So far she's only gone on the potty once, though she'll sit on it several times a day. She recognizes when she needs to go and can tell me, but just can't go once she sits on the potty. Of course she can go all over the floor a minute or two after she stands up. =) She also hates having a wet diaper on and asks for me to change it once she wets it, so I think we're close. We just need to keep trying.
2. Loves to strip off her clothes and diaper/undies and run around in her birthday suit. She'll squeal and say "I'm nakey (naked)" as she runs around. A few times I've actually taped her diaper all the way around her so she can't pull it off.
3. Loves to sing along with her children's CD's. She doesn't love, however, when anyone else tries to sing with her. If they do she yells "NO, NO SING!! MY SING!!"
4. The other day I was giving her a bath, and when she sat down in the water it was a little too warm. So I asked her, "Is the water too hot?" To which she replied, "Hot water," as she started to blow on it to cool it off. =)
5. Dressed up as a ladybug for Halloween.  It was a costume that Lexie wore when she was Faith's age.  She was a cute little bug.
